How Serato change my DJ life

I bet that title got your attention! Anybody who’d ever seen me play before 2008 would be able to tell you that I was a vinyl diehard. I would say that starting in maybe 2005 [after we closed, and I lost my DJ home] I started becoming a bit more interested in methods of DJing other than the traditional vinyl + turntable.

More on this after the break.

You see its not that vinyl didn’t work for me. Much to the contrary, I love vinyl and always will, but the practicality of it, that’s another story. I used to always bring 2 crates of records with me to gigs because I like to be prepared and have tons of options. When I started traveling far and flying to gigs, I would be reduced to 1 crate which was still quite a pain to lug around. That wasn’t the clincher though. I would say somewhere in the 2006 timeframe the EDM scene went very digital, very fast. I would try to shop for records and wouldn’t able to find 2/3rds of what I wanted, but of course, it was right there on Beatport waiting to be downloaded. When I could find records, they’d cost a minimum of $10 a pop. The same track on Beatport would be $1.50.

So when I bought my first Macbook Pro to get into production, I also explored some different DJing options. I researched and settled on Serato Scratch Live, because it would let me still spin vinyl, just off of my laptop. Now I can bring my entire records collection with me to every gig I play, and in one bag that weighs half of the old record crate.

You know, now that I’m writing this, I realize this isn’t a post, its more like an essay, so I’ll probably turn this into a series of posts over time. If anyone has had similar experiences, please share them.
